Keyword tools

You don't have a current one?

I don't have an API access key. I applied for one at my old employer under their account, but that doesn't help now. Is there anyway I can still use this tool?

I didn't even know it existed :(.

What does it allow you to do, over say conventional tools?

I dont use the API for tracking anymore. Google (API) pages from Ireland wasn't returning the same results as when compared to Google.ie (Pages from Ireland) in the application we use for SERP's.

API used to be much faster though but its innaccurate, especially if a client went to check them. Also, with the cap on searches I had to switch to Google instead.

Optimising Keyphrases

When placing anchor text in a link, how often should you vary the phrases. IE. if im going for marbella property should I just keep using that as the anchor text or should I mix it up, maybe sometimes just use property then just marbella as well.

Sorry if this isn´t being explained well, but I hope you catch my drift.

I don't think there's any hard and fast rule, with some SEOs saying that variation is good, and others that you should stick to the keyphrase that's most important to you. However, splitting them up doesn't seem too wise: the keywords "Marbella" and "Property" are both far too wide in scope. Perhaps you could try some better variations, like "Property in Marbella", or some long-tails, like "Beach front Marbella Property" (presuming you have beach front property in Marbella).

One final question to you, how many links do you think is safe to post every day?

I presume you're asking how many links is it safe to place on your own site per day, and to be honest there's no rule for this either, but you should keep the number of links out of any page to a maximum of 50.

If you're asking how many links is it safe to get TO your site, that's a different story. Mainly because you've no control over when a link to your site will be put up - it's in the hands of another webmaster. You could make 100 link requests per day, but it might be weeks before some are active, and days for others.

Instead of focusing on the quantity of links, think more about the quality. One good link from a page with decent PR, few other links out, and content relevant to your own, will do you more good than 50 links from dodgy pages with no PR and no real content. Try to get links from sites that are in the same field of business as your own, but not in direct competition.

A good source of information on linking in particular, and SEO in general, is Jill Whalen's High Rankings. She has answered all these questions, and others you may have later, and her site is easy to search around in. Quite a relevant question

The search engines look at the pattern with which your site gets links. I honestly do not think the number of links your site gets a day matters as long as it is consistent

If your site suddenly gets 150 links one day and then nothing subsequently, you links will raise a flag leading to your site being investigated

But if you get the same number and this is consistent then no worries

WebCEO &

If I'm doing assessments on sites i like to use this free tool for a nice overall view on how a site is doing with search engines and in terms of social media status: Website SEO Tool | Website Grader

But personally like to use the paid version of WebCEO in order to manage all my monthly SEO tasks (linktracking, keywords, sitemap generation etc). The free stuff all seems to provide seperate functions. Best to get something that does everything and stores the history if you working on more that 3 sites - i my opinion. :)
