I told them I reported them. I was a bit pissed off with the fact I couldn't unsubscribe from their mailings.

Under Irish law they have to remove your from their list once requested.

Who was it?

It was an German Comany. I will PM you the name and some more details. I'd prefer not to name and shame right now in case they want to waste their money and try and sue me.

IMHO, email marketing is dead. Even you get people to opt-in, spam filters will probably filter out what you send and people won't really read it. And direct marketing too expensive. Just do PPC campaigns/SEO up your site and get customers who are actively looking to buy your stuff. Tonnes of money in it.

Having just read through the thread ...

1 email that may be relevant to the company asking them to opt in is acceptable in my opinion ... once they don't opt in ... remove them from your list ...

I hate spam ... in both kinds email and snail ... I do however actually look at the spam mail I get in through my letterbox ... from a design point of view ... as well as from a ... something free point of view (whether its 20% off something or similar)

Spam I get into my inbox ... I check if there is some text in there ... if its just an image it gets junked immediately ...

I don't consider ... viagra / perscription drugs / date me / free personals or social network signups to be valid unless sent by an actual friend I know :D

I guess however I'd draw a fairly fine line over what is valid and what isn't
...

as a developer / graphics person .. I'd be curious about graphics packages and developer tools ...

However if I was getting asked to join a forum ... I'd consider it spam ... as I got asked today on a forum and reported it accordingly

And the user in question got banned :)
Asking moderators to join a competing forum is a bit dumb tbh

Yes. IF it's actually properly targetted and done properly.

Yes.

If you send an email to me directly and address me directly by name, I'm a lot less likely to consider your mail to be spam.

If you send me a huge bloody attachment unsolicited I will spamcop you, report you to your ISP etc., etc. as you are wasting my time and clogging up my network

I know its an old thread but was just reading over it and saw Blacknights post above. Would people agree that its ok to go this route, sending an email directly to the person addressing them by name and personally writing to them on a one off to market something as oppose to going down the route of bulk mailing.
Im just curious as to peoples thoughts as if you were to bulk mail and import in a datebase you would be able to sub in the person name such as dear 'John' etc etc.
