A friend of mine wants to set up a small business (unrelated to the web) and I might go in with him if it takes off
The business by it nature will have to be based in ireland with local clients

I am building a website for him
I have been doing some keyword research and have found a good few terms.
One keyword in particular is very good and also the .ie of the key word is free

Basically if I bought a .ie domain name with the exact keyword I want to rank for how easily would it be to get on the 1st page of google in ireland for that keyword

Search Engine Optimization doesn't only rely on the domain name - yes it is an important factor - but there are so many other related points that makes that website spring above all results in the SERPs.

nothing comes easy, but with a bit ( more than a bit) of work and patients, you should be able to pull-it off....

I think the biggest factor to consider is competition for the keyword, a keyword domain will help but depending on competition for the keyword you could go straight to the first page in a month or so or it could take years to never. Look at the current results for the keyword to get an idea of how easy it might be.

A lot will depend on the niche the site / business is targetting.

If you were targetting something obscure then you would probably have better luck than if you were aiming at something more competitive

Just as a silly example, anything involving financial services or hotels is highly competitive

Very much agree with a lot of what Louie and BK say

Point to note is that if the .ie is available, its possibly not that competitive maybe ? Well I don't know...but ....if you wanted to rank for hotels in Dublin and you owned HotelsInDublin.ie, then I'd say its going to be very helpful :)

If you're in a sector where you have lots sites around for, say 8 years, - then you may have a struggle. I dont own any .ie's myself - I have lots of clients with them - but i like .coms and I've never had too much trouble outranking them, in most cases.

Using .ie extension, blending Irish keywords in the content, getting inbound links from Irish websites can help your website to rank top in Google Irish.

Should be easily doable - all you have to do is gain trust - keep things white hat and most importantly

Deserve to be listed most highly for the relevant search term(s) by being the best!

How do you be the best?

Provide the best most relevant results - the sort of result you or anyone (including your closest firends and family) would be most happy to have found for that search query!

EG help everyone - the search engines included - to find the best and most relevant results by providing them!

.ie

It will take a lot besides the other 40 or so actions needed to be ranked selecting a .ie will severaly restrict you to .ie users(ie) google.ie searches, where the majority of users will use google.com

What you could do as if you say the key word is not registered use .com put a - in the name and include ireland in the domain or ire (ie) carpenter-s.com or carpenters-ireland.com

or make a subpage such as carpenters.commmm/carpenters.ie/htmk

Had to post the url mock up like that over the ten post rule but you should get the drift or some one else might be able to post and explain it.:)

Make sense?

John sub domains/pages are not a great idea RE Google! Check their webmaster guidelines fella(s) Google are not all that keen on them they prefer your-niche.ie/carpenters-for-hire

I also would mention if it is wholly just the Irish Republic you want to target OP restricting things for that one domain will be OK - Of course John is right and wholly so if you don't wnat to restrict this just to Eire.

From what i can see its better to go with a .ie domain if the target market is in Ireland.

If i type google.com in my browser Google automatically directs me to google.ie which i presume happens because Google knows my location - connected via an Irish ISP (question - does everyone see the same?).

Keywords then rank higher in google.ie as compared to google.com

I'd start with the .ie and the keyword domain name as the basics, and build on it from there.

Disclaimer - i'm not an Internet SEO guru of any sort, just my observations as a hobbyist playing around over the last few months.
