can a uk based company get a .ie domain name

ive seen a few sites around that have on the bottom that they are based in the uk but yet they have a .ie domain how is that possible ,

Well its not impossible. Companies from the UK can't be excluded - its anti-EU law for a start (open common economy etc) but if they have a "presence" in Ireland, then they can. Most of the companies "present" in the IFSC for example are just a bronze plaque on a wall.

As long as the company has either a trademark covering Ireland or a link to Ireland they can get a .ie domain name
