I have seen quite a few people who have businesses here. My question is how did you come up with your company name? hmm... Blacknight. Good name but where does it come from :)

Comon' guys, spill the beans...

well, it's probably obvious in my case...

you have the waterworks for water services, gasworks for gas services, and in our case, webworks.ie provides web services

I thought myself oh-so-smart when I called my writing company The Write Stuff many a moon ago.

Turns out there is at least one company of that name in every English-speaking city of the world. But at least punters get an idea of what I do most of the time.

I nearly called a publishing company HardHat, for the simple reason that all music companies tend to be either acronyms or laughably optimistic puns (Buy My Music, Hit Sounds Music, etc.).

There is a certain art to naming things. I'll let you know when I master it.

Company Names

Hi there,

I chose Laughing Lion Design because I'm a Leo and I laugh (sometimes) and I chose Digital Design Cottage because I live in a very small bungalow/cottage in the sticks (Westmeath).

For anyone trying to come up with a name, here's a website, What Brand Are You? A branding viral by The Design Conspiracy ,you might find handy and save you thousands of quid on Branding Experts.

all the best

The danger with having a name that is so literal, is that it leaves little room for manoeuvre when you start supplying e-mail services, mobile SEO or God knows what else further down the line. Also, anything with the word "free" is a double-edged sword.

Okay. The long version...
I'm a big fan of clean design and white space and was happily working as a graphic designer in Dublin but was appaled at the state of most of the web sites I was coming across - the typography, layout, sense of colour and communication in general just wasn't there. So I packed in the job and started to teach myself the ins and outs of web design to bring my style to de interweb. I called it EdenWeb because at the time the tagline was 'making the web a perfect place' or some crap :). That changed to 'Creative Usability' shortly afterwards while I was working in the usability dept of a software company and these days it's 'Design for Digital Marketing'.
It's all based on the same design principles though.

Thankfully, the web today is full of great web design and Ireland has some great web designers too.

The name is detour, as in take a different path to your usual, my logo is based on a road sign.
The hyphen is an association with my parent company drop-d ltd.
drop-d is an alternate way of tuning a guitar.
So D-Tour

Incidently before I started my web company I had registered D-Tour for the magazine as I was planning a national band competition and I was offereing a prize of a natinal tour so it also double as "the tour" (d-tour)

so my company brand came from an old siite i was not using ;)

Sorry to drag this one up again.... but the missus came up with ours.... 2bscene

I wanted to get the point across that it's not just good enough to have a website, it needs "to be seen" to be successful.

The missus came up with the "2b" bit and I liked the idea of playing on the word "obscene" so I could do some mails and grab peoples attention....

In hindsight, it's a terrible name.... everytime I give out my email address, I have to spell it....... ah sure... u live and you learn....
