How long does it take for dns changes to propagate?

How long does it take for dns changes to propagate? I changed dns entries for a domain on the 1st. The whois records point at the new dns server however my isp's still point at the old. Surely 48hours is the max? I changed a different domain's dns server on the 31st and this was reflected by my isp yesterday. Any ideas?

depend where you are hosting the website.
it shouldn't take more than 48 hours but i have seen it happened before.
