I think they can still serve a purpose if the site that you are swapping with is relevant, but I wouldn't go overboard with them. Try and request a link within the content of their website rather than on a 'links' page. I think it's a waste of time setting up a seperate 'links' page. Google tends to ignore links on these types of pages.

reciprocal links are now not recommended. It is better to have one way or a three way link exchange.

one big disadvantage of reciprocal links is that your link to a site can often seem like it is only there so you can get that site's link back to you, and the search engines generally don't like any content that looks like it is aimed at them rather than at actual users of a site. You need to try to have a logical reason, related to the content of your site, for that link to be there

The search engines can easily identify which sites link to whom, so reciprocal links can be easily identified and are counted very little by the search engines these days. However, the most important thing is that links you get are related, quality inbound links definitely will help to get higher SERP. A link is a link either its one way link, reciprocal link or three way link as long as it is a good inbound link and source of the link have high PageRank and of course non-spammy site, it will help your rankings.

Hi..
Reciprocal links need a fairer hearing and greater understanding of all of the variations involved. Not all reciprocal links are bad news for a website.
The first thing that springs to mind when the subject of reciprocal links appears is good old fashioned link trading. In fact, link swaps are only one aspect of the overall topic of reciprocal links. Far more than simple link exchanges, reciprocal links also include website themes and topics, cross linking of self administered websites, and the even more problematic link farms. There is more than one issue bundled into the overall category of reciprocal links.
The reasons for creating reciprocal links are many, but the most important ones revolve around gaining extra website traffic, providing information for site visitors, gaining additional Google PageRank, and adding additional link popularity for a boost in the search engine rankings.

Yes, they are bad now a days.some old sites still rank higher with reciprocal links. But Google does not allow reciprocal links now a day.For better clarification you can read Google webmaster Guidelines as well as Google webmaster blog. Also do not keep reciprocal links of web directories on your website as well as do not buy links from web directories.Better method of link building is social bookmarking and links from blogs.

A few reciprocal links won't do any harm. I repeat, a few of them and coming from relevant sites, preferably in your niche. But if you overdo them, the major search engines (especially Google) will get suspicious and your website will get in trouble. Always use your common sense and try not to cross the line when it comes to search engine guidelines.
